The symptoms of COVID-19 are unspecific; they are diverse and vary widely from asymptomatic cases to severe pneumonia with lung failure and death. This means that no generally valid statements can be made regarding the “typical” course of the virus. Determining whether you have the illness yourself is difficult to determine without being tested. A SARS-CoV-2 infection typically leads to severe pneumonia in certain risk groups. In other groups, people may only experience mild symptoms.

There are currently no vaccines against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Those who belong to certain risk groups (elderly people or those with pre-existing health conditions) are recommended to be vaccinated against influenza (the flu) and pneumococci after consultation with their family physician. (In certain cases, those suffering from specific illnesses may not be eligible for vaccinations)

Tests should be carried out for individuals who are experiencing symptoms such as coughing or fever and who have been in contact with someone with a confirmed or suspected case of the illness. Tests should also be carried out for individuals who are experiencing symptoms after returning from a risk area. A comprehensive list of risk areas is available on the Robert-Koch-Institute website.
