“Weimar – in bloom for Europe” is the slogan we are using for our participation in the Entente Florale competition, which recognises horticultural excellence in towns, cities and villages across Europe. After winning through the national qualifying rounds in 2008 and with one gold medal already in the bag, Weimar is set to compete against ten other locations as the representative for Germany. For the many people involved in the project, this is a dream come true as well an acknowledgement and reward for their tireless efforts. It is also an incentive to continue all their colourful projects in 2009 and to come up with new and creative ideas. But that means more than just the horticultural displays that brighten up our streets and public squares: “Moving Chairs”, “Fountain Night”, “Aesthetic Advice for Garages & Dealerships” and “Flower Field at the Homeless Shelter” are only some of the projects that demonstrate the sustainable changes that Weimar is undergoing. Adding more greenery, more flowers and improving the quality of life. Businesses, clubs, institutions and numerous local people, including children, are working hard to ensure that the Entente Florale is a resounding success for Weimar.

After winning a gold medal in 2004, many participants and Weimar residents expressed the desire to enter the Entente Florale competition again. Back then, the enthusiasm for and the commitment to the competition were impressive, but this time round – in 2008 and 2009 – there has been, is and will be an even bigger wave of excitement. This is exactly what is required if we are to master this challenge – and mastering it involves everyone! Countless preparatory events and working groups have given rise to many projects.
